latewithstarbutts asked: I love your photography, the lighting and composition are always so clean and just incredibly flattering regardless of where they're shot. If you don't mind me asking, do you normally shoot with just one or two external flashes (my friend had a shoot with you a while back) or is there other lighting equipment you usually use?

Thank you so much! It really means a lot to me, when I hear from people who enjoy my work - especially since I work hard to make convention locations work for my cosplayers no matter the series.

I generally shoot with one or two flashes. One flash is my keylight and is generally used with a lumodi beauty dish as a diffuser. I then sometimes add a second flash as a backlight or rimlight, pending on the location and look I’m going for.  I have a third flash I bring out for big groups, big spaces, killing the sun or really intricate locations. I also make use of homemade grids, snoots, and a selection of gels for some colour fun.

I have some posts discussing my lighting setups here, here, here and here if you’re interested as well.

Shooting in full sunlight! Tips and Tricks.

Sorry this took a few days to get to - I wanted to put something comprehensive together.

In short, the answer to getting photos that look like mine, is fill flash. And lots of it.

(Two flashes set camera left and right, and both at full power (or one at 1/2 and the other at 1/1, I can’t exactly recall.)

More under the cut.
